SCULPTURING
I had been fascinated by stones and wood since my early childhood. Since then I bring interesting pieces home from everywhere. When I realised that it was nearly impossible to keep the clay soil of the steep part of my garden in flowery state, I decided to build a scree on a surface of approximately 80 m². The whole family joined in a great and happy effort, transporting close to 16 tons of stones and rocks to our garden, including some matching tree trunks. This was done in the years 1976–77. The scree is still beautiful – no stone has been used for a sculpture yet!
During the thirty years of my professional life, I began banging on rocks or stones to reduce inner tension. Slowly I found pleasure in this work and looked for better equipment. Gradually my capabilities improved, bringing great pleasure. I never use sketches or models. I prefer to sense the impression that the piece of stone or wood draws me to. I have some rocks lying around until they speak to me, which may take months or even years.
I do not have any preferences concerning material. Switching between different kinds of stone or wood is a source of inspiration or challenge. This is how sculptures formed/materialised out of lime stone, sandstone, marble, gneiss or granite. With wood the range covers lime, ash, beech, cherry, walnut, jacaranda, cedar to the extremely hard doussié.
